Don’t drag your data through the murky waters of Social networking insecurely

It seems every app nowadays has a “social factor”, whether you’re on your fitness app with your friend group, or just trying to catch up on the neighborhood drama.  Any and everything is connected to the internet and we have a tendency to over share, when we don’t mean to.  Privacy is starting to disappear right before our eyes.  Hackers love this kind of thing, cause the more information you put on the internet like your kids, pets, family member names, your wedding anniversary, birthdays, or even where you currently are on vacation is a gold mine for people who do OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) on you or your organization.  Sure, there are benefits to having your birthday in local smoothie place’s system, you could get a free smoothie or $5 off your next purchase. Think about this though, how many of your passwords use your birthday? what’s your bank account pin code? Maybe the code to unlock your gate?

Slowly but surely your information shows up everywhere, and you’re probably not keeping up with it each time.

  • We recommend no social media accounts be fully public, keep accounts private so none of your information is leaking out of your grasp
  • Don’t accept friend requests unless you personally know them.
  • Update your pin codes/password that have your birthday/public information such as names or important dates.
    • Save them in your phone or a “Password Manager”

Every leaky faucet on social media could put you at risk of identity theft or being hacked.
